During the ninth month of the Islamic calender, the Muslim fast. The will refrain from consuming food, and drink even water, or their own saliva (consciously, that is). Further reading can be referred to at wikipedia.

However, as much as this is how fasting should be, the actions and attitude of must of the Muslim here in Malaysia really makes to think otherwise. It seems like that are only doing it because the Islamic Law forced them into it, for the sake of that, or they would be happily feasting as they wish too.

I have came across a few different scenario. Firstly, I would like to mention that I have nothing against Islam, or another of their practitioner. Must just be some of the bad apples among the true hearted.

First case I have seen, isn't fasting something to test the heart, and the perseverance of them? Every time when I pass by any eateries near (but before) the time for forth prayers (the time when they can break the fast and start eating). For sure there will be an army of them hogging all the tables, sitting there day dreaming, napping, staring into thin air waiting for the time to arrive. If there are children around, then I do understand that it's for their children's good. But fuck, even a full table of adults, or teenagers, will be there for the same reason. Doesn't that just show that they do not understand the reason to fast at all?

Secondly, I was at 7-eleven at a very bad timing. The break fast time in the evening. The bloody cashier took 3 minutes to come out from the pantry to serve people on the line. I asked her casually,

"Dah masa 'tuk buka puasa ke? (time to break fast?)"
"Ya, lapar lar. Total tiga ringgit lapan puluh sen (yea, I'm hungry, total of RM3.80)"
"Oh, terima kasih ya, balik makan ke? (Oh, thanks. Back to your meal?)"
"Ya!"*rush back to pantry like a hungry tiger*

I could have taken another 2 Hall's and 2 Mentos and walk out. There is no body taking charge of the whole freaking 7-eleven because they rather take risk getting fire to trade for an slightly earlier meal than take shift between them. *sigh*

So? What is the point they even bother fasting?
